Intro to Gainbridge & Annuities
California's insurance regulations generally don't allow the MVA feature on fixed annuities. In line with that, we only offer California residents the version of this product with Principal Protection and no MVA, and terms are capped at 9 years instead of 10.
Gainbridge℠ is a subsidiary of Group 1001, an insurance holding company with approximately $86.1 billion in combined assets under management as of March 31, 2026.
Your contract is issued by Gainbridge Life Insurance Company, which is the insurer legally responsible for paying what you're owed. Group 1001 is its parent company.
You open and manage your account with Gainbridge℠ directly. There's no broker or middleman.
Anyone 18 or older, in every state except New York and Puerto Rico. For Flex specifically, the age window runs 18 to 90 — no owner or annuitant can be over 90 at the time you apply.

Depends on whether you have Flex or Retirement Flex. Flex is taxable as you go — the interest credited to your annuity each year counts as taxable income whether or not you touch it. Retirement Flex is tax-deferred, so you don't owe anything until you withdraw, and then it follows the rules of whichever type you picked (Traditional, Roth, or Non-Qualified). Since this affects your tax return directly, talk to a tax advisor about how it lands for you specifically.
Daily on money in your terms and your Cash Wallet. The rate we quote you is an annual rate, but you only earn the full amount by keeping your money in for the whole year — compounding builds gradually, so pulling money out early means you'll have earned less than that annual rate implies.
$100 to open, and you can add as little as $50 at a time.
There's no minimum for any single term, so you can split one deposit across several if you want.
There are no annual or maintenance account fees and no sales commissions. We don't charge you to open an account, hold one, or add money to it.
The costs that exist are tied to taking money out of a term before it ends. Withdrawing more than your annual 10% free amount brings an early withdrawal fee and, in most states, a market value adjustment and, for Retirement Flex, an IRS tax penalty for any withdrawal before age 59 1/2. In California and Nevada, a state premium tax also applies if you fully withdraw your contract or convert it to income payments.
Because we don't pay agent commissions, more of what your money earns goes to your rate.
The main difference is how your interest is taxed. The two products work the same way, but Retirement Flex grows tax-deferred.
With Flex, your interest is taxable in the year it’s credited. Because IRS early withdrawal penalties don’t apply, Flex can work well for goals before retirement. With Retirement Flex, your interest grows tax-deferred and is designed for retirement savings. How withdrawals are taxed depends on the type of account you set up.
Everything else works the same way. Same terms, same minimums, and each account has its own Cash Wallet. Rates are set separately for each product, so check the current rate for the account you're opening.
A fixed annuity offers guaranteed growth at a fixed rate. A variable annuity’s returns are based off the underlying sub-account investments which are linked to market performance, which means your balance can go up or down.
