Retirement (Flex & Single Premium)
Yes. Once your contract has been open through at least one calendar year-end (12/31), we calculate your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) amount for you when it applies. Your RMD is always free of surrender charges, no matter where in your contract the money is coming from. Since taking an RMD isn't yet available for self-service in the portal, call our team at 1-866-252-9439 and we'll walk you through it.
Retirement Flex may be a good fit if you want tax-deferred growth without committing everything as a single lump sum, you're moving money over from an existing 401(k), IRA, or annuity, or you like laddering terms — which also helps later when you're taking required withdrawals. It's not limited to strictly ”qualified” avings either. You can open a Non-Qualified Retirement Flex account with after-tax savings from a bank account, or move over funds from an existing non-qualified annuity or a 1035 exchange.
A direct rollover (or, between IRAs,,a trustee-to-trustee transfer) typically avoids triggering tax. If the money is paid to you instead, your plan may withhold 20%, and any amount you don’t deposit within 60 days may be taxable, plus a possible 10% IRS tax penalty if your under age 59 ½.Confirm the specifics with a tax advisor before you move anything.
Straight to the Cash Wallet. Nothing gets locked into a term unless you choose one when you deposit.
You start earning interest on the day we receive your funds. For bank transfers, this is typically 2-5 business days from when you initiate funding. For retirement transfers, it's usually when your previous institution releases the funds. Your interest rate is locked from the day you submit your application, and you'll earn that rate from the day we receive your deposit.
Any term from 1 to 10 years. In California, terms run from 1 to 9 years.
Each term has its own rate, and rates vary by term. You'll see the rate for every term before you choose.
You can also leave money in your Cash Wallet with no term at all, where it earns a rate that changes over time and stays available.
Withdrawals of taxable amounts are subject to ordinary income tax from a qualified annuity (Gainbridge: Retirement Flex) and if taken before age 59½ are subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.
$100 to open, and you can add as little as $50 at a time.
There's no minimum for any single term, so you can split one deposit across several if you want.
$2,000,000 — and that's an aggregate figure across everything, your Flex account and your Retirement Flex account combined, not $2M for each.
The older product was built around a single deposit: 3–10 year terms, a $1,000 minimum, and no way to add money without opening an entirely new contract. Flex starts at $100 (with $50 add-ons), offers 1–10 year terms (1–9 in California), lets you add money to the same account whenever you want, and lets you withdraw some of it yourself online — up to your penalty-free amount (which includes 10% of your term balance each year).
You can open a Retirement Flex account as one of these types: Non-Qualified, Traditional IRA, SEP-IRA, or Roth IRA (contributory or transfer). A 401(k) can't be the account type itself — but money from a 401(k) can still be rolled in, landing in a Traditional IRA-type account instead.
A few plan types aren't eligible at all, as a source or a destination: self-employed/Keogh plans, beneficiary (stretch) IRAs, 457(b) plans, non-qualified inherited contracts, and qualified inherited (beneficiary IRA) contracts. We also don't work with institutional plans, like defined benefit plans.
The Cash Wallet is the part of your account that isn't committed to a term. It earns interest, and it's available from the day your contract starts.
You can do three things with it. Leave it there and keep earning, move it into a term to lock in a guaranteed rate for a specific period, or withdraw it. There's no early withdrawal fee and no market value adjustment on Cash Wallet money, so you can take it out anytime with no charge. Of course, for Retirement Flex, an IRS tax penalty may apply if you are under age 59½.
Because it isn't locked, the rate can change at any time. Money that arrives without instructions goes to your Cash Wallet by default, and so does money available at the end of a term, if you haven't told us what to do with it.
